The Dogon, a people of the central plateau region of Mali, are among the oldest surviving cultural groups in Africa and are well know for their wood sculpting. The Dogon Ladder, a functional piece of sculpture, was used to access their homes which were built into the sides of sandstone cliffs. While no longer functional, the ladder retains its sculptural qualities and natural patina making it a prized piece of Dogon art.
